What Is A Refrigeration And Air Conditioning Engineer?

A refrigeration and air conditioning engineer installs, maintains and repairs cooling systems or ventilators. Engineers may be required to attend buildings or vehicles and likely encounter and support many different business types.

In the role, candidates will survey settings where cooling systems should be fitted, plan the layout of pipes, and complete the installation. Additionally, engineers need to conduct regular quality checks to ensure safe equipment. Fault finding and fixing errors fast is critical.

As a customer-facing role where engineers visit sites on behalf of their business, friendly and approachable nature is necessary. Refrigeration and air conditioning specialists may also take the time to advise customers on how to reduce their energy consumption.

A career in installing and repairing air conditioning equipment is fulfilling and often fundamental to the health of your customer, but it also poses challenges. Your working environment could be freezing, cramped and dusty, and you’ll be on the road often at potentially unsociable hours for emergency repairs.

What Qualifications Do Refrigeration And Air Conditioning Engineers Need?

  • Customer service experience.
  • A keen eye for detail.
  • Exceptional capacity for problem-solving.
  • A patient nature, rather than being prone to stress.
  • Confidence when operating basic technology.
  • Mathematical skills to calculate the size of system parts.

You can attain this role by completing a college course or an apprenticeship.

College courses that’ll qualify you are a level 2 diploma in either Access to Building Services Engineering or Installing and Maintaining Refrigeration Systems. Alternatively, you could complete a level 3 diploma in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems, or a T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction.

If you decide on an apprenticeship, you need to finish a building services engineering installer intermediate course. You could also choose a refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump engineering advanced apprenticeship.
